Generous EU Contribution Bolsters CTBT Verification

The European Union Council has provided a contribution of €5,280,000 as part of their EU Strategy against Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, the CTBTO announced last week. The contribution marks the largest ever voluntary contribution by the EU to the CTBTO, and is more than €5 million beyond the EU Member States' assessed annual contribution. A CTBTO press release states that the EU contribution will directly fund work related to the CTBTO auxiliary seismic station, strengthening on site inspections and the monitoring of noble gases and providing technical assistant to African, Latin American and Caribbean countries to facilitate their full participation in the CTBT's verification regime.

Correction: In a previous email version of this posting, the EU contribution was referred to as €5 million over EU Member States assessed annual contribution. It has now been corrected to reflect that it is in fact more than €5 million.
