“The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty at Forty:
Addressing Current and Future Challenges”

Arms Control Association (ACA) Annual Meeting and Luncheon

Monday, June 16, 2008

Location: Carnegie Endowment for International Peace,
1779 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington, D.C.

This year’s Arms Control Association (ACA) annual meeting and luncheon will focus on the 40th anniversary of the nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) and how the global nonproliferation regime can be strengthened to last another 40 years and beyond.

Ambassador Sergio Duarte, the United Nations high representative for disarmament affairs, has agreed to be a keynote speaker at the event. Chairman of the last NPT Review Conference in 2005, Ambassador Duarte will share his views on how the world can strengthen the NPT and make greater progress toward achieving its purposes. Few diplomats, officials, or experts have as many personal and lifelong experiences with the NPT as Ambassador Duarte, and the Association is honored that he will help commemorate the treaty’s first 40 years and address its current and future challenges.

Other expert speakers will discuss the key challenges facing the NPT and the nonproliferation and disarmament system, as well as strategies and solutions to address them. The event also will present views on the steps the next U.S. president will need to take in order to restore U.S. nonproliferation leadership and create the conditions necessary to strengthen the NPT at its 2010 Review Conference.

Please plan to join your fellow Arms Control Association members and other colleagues on June 16 in Washington, D.C. for this exciting event.

A registration discount will be available to ACA members.
