The Arms Control Association's work is as vital as ever, because today's weapons-related security challenges are no less difficult than they were three and a half decades ago...
In 1971, a group of former government officials and leading scholars founded an independent organization to educate the public about the perils of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons, and the ways that arms control enhances national and international security.
Over the last 35 years, the treaties and initiatives ACA has promoted have resulted in:
- thousands of nuclear warheads removed from delivery systems;
- tons of fissile material destroyed or locked safely away;
- tens of thousands of conventional weapons destroyed;
- entire classes of abhorrent weapons outlawed;
- a de facto ban on nuclear testing; and
- countries around the world abandoning or forgoing nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons development.
RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS
Arms Control Today and ACA's website provide journalists, legislators, diplomats, educators, and the general public with authoratative coverage and in-depth analysis of the latest arms control developments, as well as interviews with top policy figures. Congressman John Spratt, Jr. (D-S.C.) says, "Those of us on Capitol Hill who regularly read and rely on Arms Control Today are grateful for its thoughtfulness and consider it a great asset in our efforts to bring attention, focus, and pragmatic solutions to the arms control debate."
POLICY ADVOCACY
ACA is among the most well-respected and frequently cited sources on arms control and international security, delivering thoughtful perspectives that might not otherwise be heard. ACA organizes press briefings featuring former ambassadors, members of Congress, and distinguished experts. ACA issues dozens of press advisories a year to alert the media to breaking issues. ACA staff and board members testify before Congress and are sought out by diplomats.
CAMPAIGNS
ACA brings together people from inside and outside government - in the United States and around the world. ACA has led diverse coalitions to defend the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, defeat proposals for new nuclear weapons, renew diplomacy to end North Korea's nuclear weapons program, strengthen the nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, and stop the production of nuclear bomb material by all states.
