Managing Editor, Arms Control Today
JOB SEARCH UPDATE - AUGUST 23: We are still accepting applications, but have begun the first round interview process. We are not planning to review new applications at this time, unless we decide to move beyond those already received and reviewed.
The Arms Control Association, founded in 1971, is a national nonpartisan membership organization dedicated to promoting public understanding of and support for effective arms control policies. Under direction of the Editor of Arms Control Today (ACT), the Managing Editor is primarily responsible for coordinating, editing, and producing content related to ACT, as well as developing and executing marketing and outreach projects for ACT and the Association.
Responsibilities
Editing
The Managing Editor works with the Editor to complete the multiple tasks required for the production of a monthly magazine. These tasks include tracking the production process, keeping the process on schedule, editing copy and reviewing and approving the work of the copy editor, proofing all changes put into galleys, drafting and approving captions, headlines, charts, and graphics, and overseeing accuracy of names and titles.
The Managing Editor also assists with solicitation of feature articles and development of news articles and other magazine content, and editorial judgments on acceptances and rejections of manuscripts.
Depending on editorial and journalistic skill and experience, the Managing Editor may work closely with the Editor and ACT authors to edit feature and news articles to make sure that they are clear, complete, logically and factually correct, and easy to read. S/he may also write portions of the magazine, ranging from short updates to news articles.
Circulation, Marketing, and Advertising
Under the direction of the Deputy Director of the Association and the Editor of Arms Control Today, the Managing Editor is responsible for developing and implementing marketing campaigns, and working with the Advertising Director in soliciting and placing advertisements. The Managing Editor is also responsible for monitoring databases and working to increase the number of paid ACT subscribers and ACA members. The Managing Editor may also attend conferences and work to place ACT material at other events or fora. Experience with marketing, including in new-media formats, is especially valuable as the Association would like to develop and launch an aggressive marketing campaign in the coming year.
Other Responsibilities
Production and Distribution Management: The Managing Editor oversees printing of the journal and its placement on ACA’s Web site, physical distribution and digital announcement of availability, and the marshaling of intern and other assistance in completing the journal.
Member/Subscriber Outreach: The Managing Editor may assist with events and projects that support membership recruitment and retention, including ACA/ACT exhibit displays, writing and production of ACA’s membership newsletter Inside ACA, and fundraising events and member meetings, as assigned by the Executive Director or Deputy Director.
Liaise with other organizations and experts: A Managing Editor with subject-specific expertise (or one looking to develop such expertise) is expected to maintain contact with other nongovernmental organizations and experts working on his/her issues, including participating in and representing the Association at interorganizational meetings and events as assigned.
Other Qualifications
The Managing Editor must be well-organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated and possess good interpersonal communications skills. S/he must have excellent reading and writing skills, including the ability to process complex information into simple, easy-to- understand language. S/he must be able to show commitment to the goals of the Association, and be resourceful in finding information necessary to get the job done. S/he must be good at juggling multiple tasks at once and work well under deadline pressure. The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate or higher level degree and strong computer skills.
